The past affects the future.

How does it affect your work?

Today archaeology is very much a part of the planning process in the UK. Planning Policy Guidance 16 (England), Welsh Office Circular 60/96 (Wales), and National Planning Guideline 5 (Scotland) have resulted in any development proposal being assessed on its archaeological potential.

If an archaeological dimension is identified by planning officers, a reputable, professional organisation, aware of commercial constraints, must be found to assess, advise and, if necessary, carry out any additional works required.

IFA Registered Organisation logo Foundations Archaeology, a registered organisation of the Institute for Archaeologists, was founded in April 1995 when it was recognised that a role existed for a company to undertake consultancy work on planning projects affected by archaeological constraints & which could supply that service to a consistent high level of quality with an emphasis on expertise combined with a rapid response to their Client's needs.

A successful two years saw the incorporation of the business as a Limited Company in October 1997 as Archaeological Management Services Ltd, although the company continued to trade as Foundations Archaeology. During the same period, in response to Client demand, Foundations Archaeology began to move out of the realm of pure consultancy to undertake field projects (evaluation & excavation), which now provides approximately 75% of the company's turnover, although consultancy remains an important part of the business.

Over the last twelve years the company has since gone from strength-to-strength and now has a nationwide reputation for rapid, high-quality work.

Foundations Archaeology has built up a client base which includes many prestigious "blue chip" companies.

The practice is committed to the highest level of quality standards and is certified to BS/EN/ISO 9001:2008 for quality assurance in the provision of archaeological services (See our Quality Policy Statement).

Foundations Archaeology is committed to quality & innovative excellence in all aspects of its work & this commitment, coupled with a hands-on approach that only practical knowledge plus a wealth of skill & experience can give, are the elements that enable Foundations Archaeology to provide efficient & effective answers to their client's requirements.
